The Rise of Collaborative Consumption

There’s a movement growing. And it’s only just getting started.

Rachel Botsman, a leading expert on the power of collaboration and sharing to transform the way we live, and co-author of What’s Mine is Yours: The Rise of Collaborative Consumption (HarperCollins, September 14th, 2010) will be a guest speaker Hub SoMa on Wednesday, October 27.  Rachel will share stories and research from all around the world, to explain the cultural and economic force of Collaborative Consumption — organized sharing, bartering, lending, trading, renting, gifting, and swapping redefined through technology and peer communities – that is reinventing not just what we consume but how we consume.

From social lending (Zopa) to car sharing (Zipcar) and co-working (The Hub), from peer-to-peer rental (Zilok) to collaborative travel (Air BnB) and neighbourhood sharing schemes (NeighborGoods) millions of people from all around the world are already using Collaborative Consumption (www.collaborativeconsumption.com).

Interactive Panel Discussion

Rachel will also moderate a panel featuring leading Collaborative Consumption pioneers who are building innovative businesses in this space:

*Panelist Update* Tim Nichols, Head Host & Community Attractor for Hub SoMa, a Co-working space for changemakers

Brian Chesky, Co-founder of Airbnb, a peer-to-peer marketplace for space rentals

Rob Garcia, Founder of The Lending Club, US’s leading social lending network

John Zimmer, Co-founder of ZimRide, a leading rideshare service

The panel will explore how we are moving into a new realm of consumerism, one marked by trust between strangers, shared access instead of ownership, and the primacy of experience over “more stuff”. It will be highly interactive with the audience driving the Q&A session.
